The pub remains closed following sudden departure of the previous tenants in summer 2025.

As at January 2026 a planning application has been submitted to turn the pub into a car wash. The application can seen and commented on by going to canterbury.gov.uk/planning-and-building/search-and-comment-planning-applications. Enter reference 25/02369

There appears to be an orchestrated campaign in favour of a car wash and those opposing it centre on highway and noise issues. There is little or no concern about the loss of the Royal Oak as a pub.
