Save the Eight Bells

The Branch feels very strongly that this much-loved pub should not be lost, and is very concerned that a planning application has been submitted to Canterbury City Council for change of use to a convenience store/vape shop.
We support the London Road Community Alliance (LRCA) in trying to raise awareness of the potential loss of this local asset and have been carrying out a leaflet campaign locally.
If this concerns you as much as it does us, we would urge you to submit an objection to the planning application - note that the deadline for doing so is 9th October 2026. To do so go to https://pa.canterbury.gov.uk/online-applications/ - enter Ref 26/01470 - then 'Make a comment'.
When making an objection to a change of use, in your comment think of the points that might make a difference, such as:
- It is contrary to the Planning framework
- It is against central government’s desire for the future of pubs
- The Eight Bells has been here for centuries; this pub over 120 yearsChange of use will affect the Historic Environment. The planning framework requires planning authorities to "conserve heritage assets in a manner appropriate to their significance, so that they can be enjoyed for their contribution to the quality of life of this and future generations”
- The Local Plan is important in promoting community development and social infrastructure (ie, keep a pub open)
- The pub is surrounded by a Conservation Area on an historic route into the city
- A pub amenity makes a positive contribution; the Eight Bells was run by the last landlady for 20 years
- The pub was a successful business for many years and could continue to be so
- To reopen as a pub would maintain or improve quality of life for residents and visitors
- It is at the heart of the community in this area - community facilities used for leisure and social purposes include public houses
- Canterbury’s cultural heritage - including its pubs - acts as a strong attraction for visitors, and tourism
- Heritage assets are the value components of the historic environment - in planning terms "the historic environment refers to all aspects of the historic environment resulting from the interaction between people and places through time"
- The proposed change of use would change the landscape character
LRCA has produced a flyer that we are distributing locally. You may download it here - please share with friends, neighbours and family.
